Soon President Biden will have the privilege of nominating someone to the Supreme Court, a privilege Presidents often do not have the opportunity to partake in as Supreme Court Justices hold lifetime appointments.
The appointment to the highest court in the land is a great responsibility. This person is expected to uphold our nation’s Constitution, safeguarding the rights and liberties enshrined by our Founding Fathers for millions of Americans.
Once Biden makes his pick, the U.S. Senate will begin the process of taking up the nomination, which involves meetings and hearings, eventually leading to a floor vote to confirm the justice.
While many – mostly the mainstream media – will speculate on who Biden will nominate, I maintain the position that we must begin this process with an open mind, treating the nominee, whoever they are, with respect through the entire process.
I say this, because Democrats have largely not granted the same courtesy and upheld the same level of respect towards previous Republican nominees.
Time and time again, Democrats have taken a close-minded approach to many Republican nominees for the Supreme Court, most of the time deciding their vote before a single meeting, hearing, or testimony took place with the nominee.
The most notable and disgraceful nomination process is that of, now Justice, Brett Kavanaugh. The way in which Democrats treated him and his family is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.
Not even a day after his nomination was announced – before he had even met with a single Democrat Senator – Senator Chuck Schumer and others were already calling to stop Kavanaugh’s nomination, or in Senator Schumer’s own words, “I’m going to fight this nomination with everything I’ve got.”
From that point on, they created a circus of the nomination process. They withheld information until it was politically convenient for them, and as a last-ditch effort to tank Kavanaugh’s nomination.
Democrats despicably and falsely accused the nominee of sexual assault and rape- an issue no one takes lightly.
Senator Mazie Hirono being among one who violated any sort of due process for Kavanaugh and immediately took to CNN with a message for all men in this county, “just shut up and step up.” So, what happened to innocent until proven guilty?
Even Senator, now Vice President, Kamala Harris joined in on the unsubstantiated claims of rape by submitting anonymous and uncorroborated accusations against Kavanaugh.
And the mainstream media also joined in on the slanderous comments, CNN further advanced the Democrats’ false narrative and linked Kavanaugh with “rape” 191 times over the course of three weeks. That’s more than 10 times per day CNN pundits falsely accused an innocent man of rape and sexual assault.
Democrats also insinuated that because Kavanaugh drank beer, he also had a drinking problem.
They speculated on Kavanaugh’s behavior based on yearbook commentary made by 17-year-old kids, and poked and prodded through high school social calendars like a bunch of mean girls who didn’t get an invite.
They launched attack after attack on Kavanaugh’s personal character, putting him and his family through months of hell, and even years later, they continue to spread false accusations.
On the one-year anniversary of his confirmation, protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court and yelled profanity and called for his impeachment.
As recently as this past December, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Reminder that Brett Kavanaugh *still* remains credibly accused of sexual assault on multiple accounts w/ corroborated details & this year the FBI admitted it never fully investigated.” This claim is entirely false, and one I doubt will be marked as misinformation by trolls at Twitter.
I’ve seen a lot of childish games from politicians in Washington, but the way in which the left treated and continues to treat Justice Kavanaugh is the lowest of lows, and frankly an embarrassment to our nation.
Regardless of who Biden chooses as his nominee, I can assure you Republicans will never stoop to the level Democrats have.
We will not go back through someone’s high school social calendar, and we will not loosely accuse someone of rape and alcoholism.
We will keep an open mind, making no rushed or harsh judgments ahead of time, and judge the nominee based on their character, experience, and their knowledge of the law.
