WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives failed to protect Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights and instead passed the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act to further entrench growing surveillance state powers:

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a flawed bill that will continue the warrantless surveillance of innocent Americans. No American should have their right to privacy taken away. I will keep doing everything in my power, including filibuster, to oppose this legislation and to speak out and stand up for forcing the government to get a warrant based on probable cause, as required by the Constitution,” said Dr. Paul.

In October 2017, Sens. Paul and Wyden introduced S. 1997, the USA Rights Act, in the Senate to end warrantless backdoor searches of Americans’ calls, emails, texts, and other communications that are routinely swept up under a program designed to spy on foreign targets. U.S. Representative Justin Amash (R-MI) sponsored the USA Rights Act amendment in the U.S. House.
