WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator and Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Rand Paul (R-KY) condemned the war and growing humanitarian crisis in Yemen on the Senate floor, where he urged support for S.J. Res. 65, his resolution of disapproval to block the sale of offensive weapons and support to Bahrain, a member of the Saudi-led coalition waging the devastating war in Yemen.

The war has led to the death of thousands of innocent civilians and left millions of Yemenis on the edge of famine.

“I’m only saying stop one sale of arms to send a message that we are done with the war in Yemen. That we are no longer going to sell weapons to countries that are fighting this war in Yemen. That the war must come to a close,” Dr. Paul stated in his speech.

“It must stop. Someone must take a stand and say, ‘Enough’s enough. We are against the humanitarian disaster in Yemen,'” he later added.

Unfortunately, the Senate voted against taking a stand to help stop the loss of innocent life in Yemen.

Amid growing international calls to end the war in Yemen, Dr. Paul’s resolution would have blocked the sale of an estimated $300 million in high-explosive rocket artillery and associated training and support to Bahrain.

The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 provides the special procedures whereby a senator can force a vote on an arms sale. Dr. Paul has previously led multiple bipartisan efforts to stand against U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen by blocking arms sales to Saudi Arabia.
