WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) continued his efforts to rein in the federal government’s reckless spending by offering an amendment to H.R. 6147, the minibus appropriations bill, to reduce each amount provided in the bill by 11.39 percent.
 
The Senate ultimately voted 25-74 to reject another opportunity to be responsible stewards of the American people’s money.
 
“The best way to do something about debt is quit spending yourself further into a hole,” Dr. Paul said during a speech on the Senate floor urging support for his amendment, later stating, “So I would advocate that if you are concerned about the debt, concerned about the deficit, and concerned about the strength of our country, that you vote to reinstitute the spending caps.”
 
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the federal deficit will hit $981 billion in FY 2019.[1]
 
Dr. Paul’s cuts, which would have totaled approximately $17.5 billion, would have been applied proportionally to the appropriations package and brought spending back in line with caps established before the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 raised the Fiscal Year 2019 caps by $68 billion for non-defense discretionary spending.
